Qualifying
I was driving the Formula Vauxhall Junior 16V again, as the TOM's 037F was not ready in time. I was in a very full qualifying session 3 with Mono 1200, 1600, 1800 and the
track was damp and greasy. I did 3 laps on the ancient wooden slicks, then came in to change to wets even though there was no standing water, as I had no grip at all. As I came into the pits, the session was red-flagged due to an accident.
It took some time to get the tyres changed, and I eventually only got another 3 laps on the wets, with only 1 wheel exerting braking effort. I qualified a relatively poor 18th overall from 33 cars, 4th in
class, but I was the fastest Vauxhall Junior. |
Race
In the very eventful race, the track had dried so there was some grip. I got a reasonable start, making up 1 or 2 places into Copse. However a few lighter and more powerful Jedis / Speads overtook me down the next straight. I picked off a few cars over the next few laps, but lost a place when a Speads rear wing collapsed at 125 mph right in front of me. I passed the Speads, then
lost a place when car 33 passed me under yellow flags. This also allowed Peter Allen in another Vauxhall Junior and John Miller to get by after the green flag. I then held position until the end of the race,
13th overall, 4th in class. This takes me to 2nd in the 1800 Class Championship. |
