Silverstone (National)

13th March 2004

Formula Vauxhall Junior 1600cc 16V. (Running in 1800 class with 2000 class)

First race of 2004, and first race in the rented Formula Vauxhall Junior. We spent most of the morning tailoring the seat, belts and pedals so I could drive the car.

Qualifying

The qualifying session was damp and the car had dodgy brakes, clutch and tyres. I managed to qualify 2nd in class, 7th overall against the bike engined cars, 1600's, 1800's and Formula Ford 2000's. The session was mainly setting the braking bias and learning just how far the car could be pushed on the old tyres.

It absolutely poured down with sleet and hailstones 5 minutes before the race, causing the whole grid to rapidly change from slicks to wets. Cars were spinning on the green flag lap, conditions were so bad. I couldn't actually see the car in front until the rain light was practically in my nose cone.

Race

On the first start there was a startline incident somewhere behind me, causing the race to be red flagged.

At the re-start I made up 4 places to 3rd before spinning at Copse, collecting Peter Daly (sorry!). We both rejoined the track several places down the field, but the first few laps of the race was pretty much a lottery as you couldn't see anything in front of you due to the spray thrown up from the preceding cars and my cars front tyres.

After 7 laps in atrocious conditions, the race was red flagged when Georgina Steinthal had a big accident on the start finish straight. I ended up 3rd in class, 7th overall from 26 runners.

In my usual Mono 2000cc class, the race was won unsurprisingly by Jonathon Lewis, although Robin Dawe was bringing the fight to him until he retired. Neil Harrison's new Dallara caught fire entering the pits after the race, but luckily the marshalls acted quickly to extinguish the car. The main damage appeared to be the engine cover and some fuel / electrical burning.
